Cal Crutchlow made a surprise return to MotoGP at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix in Mugello, but despite not finishing the race, he received high praise from one particular racing legend.

Crutchlow, who was replacing the injured Johann Zarco at LCR Honda, was greeted by Loris Capirossi following the race as the three-time world champion congratulated the British rider for his efforts.

Caught off-guard initially, Crutchlow said “what for” in response to Capirossi praising his performance, before the two shared a brief chat. You can watch the full clip below which was shared on the LCR Honda team’s social media channels.

It must also be said that this was no ordinary stand-in ride, as Crutchlow is no longer a test rider in MotoGP, nor does he compete full-time in any other championship. Crutchlow’s last appearance in MotoGP came in 2023 at the Japanese Grand Prix. Said appearance took place aboard a Yamaha M1, while last weekend’s Italian GP was Crutchlow’s first race for the LCR Honda team since 2020.

Crutchlow failed to finish the race after he picked up a suspected muscle tear near his left scapula following Sunday morning’s warm-up session. Crutchlow would go on to retire on lap 11 of the 23-lap Grand Prix.

Despite his early exit, Crutchlow was very impressive as he lapped around 2.5 seconds off the best time during the race. This was also the first time that Crutchlow rode one of the current-spec MotoGP bikes, which have continued to evolve in recent years through a heavy smattering of aero, especially at the rear of the machines.

Although Crutchlow was unable to complete Sunday’s full distance at Mugello, the Brit will once again replace Zarco at this weekend’s Hungarian GP at Balaton Park.
