Any Mobility LUV1 electric cargo bike revealed

While long-distance touring is still a bridge too far for electric bikes, there is one area where they can genuinely excel: last-mile delivery.

You may not know the term, but you’ll be sure to understand the outcome. Uber, Deliveroo and courier services nationwide rely on last-mile delivery bikes, which, for the most part, are still petrol-powered lightweight scooters and models.

The last few years, though, have seen a shift in that, with lightweight and largely unregulated electric ‘bicycles’ taking up the mantle.

This, though, could be a far more sustainable solution. And most importantly, this one can be regulated.

It’s called the LUV1, and just be thankful they didn’t call it the ‘LUV-E’. It’s electric, boasts 11kW of peak power, can hit 60mph and has a claimed range of around 80 miles. It also only needs an A1 licence, putting it firmly into motorcycle territory rather than the increasingly blurred world of electric bicycles.

And then there’s the reason it exists in the first place.

The LUV1 has a 120-litre cargo bay where you’d normally expect to find the central section of a motorcycle. There’s no attempt to disguise it, either. It is, quite literally, a huge, gaping hole in the middle of the machine, surrounded by a lightweight die-cast aluminium chassis and designed to swallow whatever you need to carry.

Any calls it a ‘Life Utility Vehicle’ (hence LUV), and the idea is that the same basic machine can be configured for different jobs. There are versions aimed at business users, commuters, families and even leisure riders. Each features different doors, bags and accessories to suit the rider’s specific needs.

For delivery riders, that 120-litre space is the headline act. The company says the cargo area can be configured with dividers, while the whole thing can be locked down in one go alongside the batteries and storage compartments. The maximum payload for the bay is a whopping 50kg, which is a heck of a lot of burgers and pizza.

Power comes from a rear-hub motor fed by two removable 6.5kWh lithium-ion batteries. Any claims a range of between 100 and 140km, depending on how it is configured and used, while a full charge takes between 2.5 and four hours from a 220V supply.

The chassis is made from die-cast aluminium, with a claimed kerb weight of 160kg and a seat height of 786mm. There’s also keyless start, integrated LED lighting for the storage areas and a phone-based system that handles navigation, battery information and range.

It isn't just designed to be a glorified delivery van, either. Any says the LUV1 can be configured as a commuter, family machine or even an adventure vehicle, with optional covers, side bags and other accessories allowing the same basic platform to do different jobs.

Its maker is pitching the LUV1 as something with the agility of a scooter, the speed of a car and enough storage to carry the stuff that normally forces you into four wheels. To see if it’ll actually do that in the real world, you’ll have to wait till late 2027, when it’s scheduled for an official launch. A guide price for the bike is €8,500 (around £7,300), although the final price will depend on the market and the bike’s final specification.
