Capable enough offroad and great fun on it
Utterly useless over distance or for speed
Although it looks the part, it’s best ridden on the roads or firmer tracks. The image of the double-hard rally rider appeals, in a package that makes riding round town and country lanes a cinch

Overall Review

Recommended - does commuting, touring and is fun to ride once it's been tuned just a little.

Strengths

This is a budget bike designed to be dropped and crashed and keep going. If you don't believe me, just look at the thickness of the steel on the footpeg hangars. I just did 5,000 miles around Europe with soft luggage and a top box and some off-road stuff too and the inevitable offs, and the bike did this just fine. It has 6,000 mile service intervals and Avon Distanzias easily cover this distance too. Plus this bike is fun too if you don't mind keeping under 120km/h/80mph

Weaknesses

The fuel injection is awful but it can be improved enormously in less than 30 seconds. Just press and hold both dash buttons as you turn on the ignition and the display will read "diag" after about 6 seconds. Then press the select button once for "co", then press andhold both buttons for "co1" and then again for the co1 number (probably about 10 as standard). press select to increase the number to about 15-20. Turn off the ignition to store the new setting. Repeat the whole process to try each number 15-20 and see what you like best.

Overall Review

Its not realy an offroad machine, its fun to just drive around, roads, gravel, citydriving, I like it. You dont have to look at the dash, it wil let you feel when you have to change gear or how fast you drive. Just look around and enjoy driving it is always ready to follow your commands. Its just about driving around the XT660R. It surprised me. I did't had that fun anymore with my 100bhp + bikes anymore. You feel more speed at lower speeds, thats the fun I think. Not so much speeding tickets anymore. Same feeling. Its not perfect, thats perfect to me.

Strengths

Fuel tank, 15 liters. Easy handling, no aggresive bike, every. one can ride it. You can move around on the buddy seat so you can easy drive all day long. Low fuel consumption. 23km / liter. Standard tyres act good on tarmac as wel on gravel. Low wearing of tires. Very smooth gearbox. No turbulence by the helmet. Value for money is great, maintenance costs are very low. Its the cheapest motor to drive i think.

Weaknesses

Vibrating a lot above 120km/h, no luggage rack, surging at low speeds, Tires are crap in the mud and wet grass. Heavy in the dirt. I want to drive all the time, i can t stop driving it. It s the same problem that i had with my XR600R, but that was a much much better bike for realy off road driving. This is not an offroad machine. If you like offroad buy a 120kg or less bike with 50bhp or more.
