The best, and most overlooked, Monster.
It was knocked out of the range after only a few years.
Ducati's latest take on the Monster theme is a refreshing mix of old and new, with up-to-the-minute styling married to a simple, effective air-cooled motor. And it's bang on the money

Overall Review

Great bike. It'd be in my dream garage, although it'd be fighting it out with an S4R RS

Strengths

All the good bits of a Ducati bundled into an amazingly tight package. Superb engine works perfectly with the chassis, the grunty air-cooled lump is great for back-lane blasts, wheelies and nipping in andout of traffic. It's a beautiful looking thing, with a single-sided swingarm, Marchesini wheels and stacked pipes. You could cut it on a trackday or bomb around France. And it'll look great parked up wherever you go.

Weaknesses

None that are immediately obvious. Slipper clutch and smoother fuelling iron out the usual trait of a performance Monster; jerky throttle response.

Strengths

Easy to ride, good position, looks fantastic, its a Ducati!

Weaknesses

Not much, only lusting after more powerful models really. Not much good for pillions or touring but never intended to do that anyway

Overall Review

I consider myself to be an advanced rider (National Road Racing licence) and find this has plenty of power. Once the suspension and brakes were sorted, this was a better road bike the the 748R I had previously ridden. I doubt I will ever sell my bike now the niggles have been sorted :-P

Strengths

Love the styling. Proper old style Ducati looks. Uncommon bike to see around these days makes it all the more special. Sounds gorgeous when you make a few mods to exhaust and airbox. Plenty of power in that engine. Who needs more than 77bhp? With lowered gearing it pulls like a train up to and beyond 100mph! (So I am tole *ahem*). Handles pin sharp with proper suspension.

Weaknesses

Terrible brakes as standard but Ducati will provide replacement master cylinder, front discs, brake lines and new calpiers all for under £350! Standard suspenders hopelessly crap and wallowy. Get a replacement rear shock from any reputable maker (I have Penske). Get the fork internals changed by a reputable suspension guru and you're sorted.

Overall Review

Nicely balanced, tasty roadster....but not the ideal choice if you do lots of big miles.

Strengths

Good, useable power. Lovely engine character and sound. Decent handling. Looks great (v sad, but I've had it for 5 years and still get the odd proud dad feeling after parking up). It's been completely reliable after 20,000 miles.

Weaknesses

Not the most comfortable. Small tank range - 100 miles before fuel light comes on (less if town riding). Servicing and replacement parts can be v expensive.
