Camier undergoes surgery on shoulder injury

Leon Camier has undergone surgery on his injured shoulder and will use the summer break to return to full fitness in time for the remainder of the World Superbike championship.

The Moriwaki-Althea Honda rider has been out of action since suffering an off during qualifying at Imola in May in which he sustained the initial shoulder injury. Camier hit the GRT Yamaha of Sandro Cortese after the German rider high-sided off directly ahead of him with the former BSB champion sustaining shoulder ligament damage.

After missing the past four rounds, Camier will also sit out Laguna Seca this weekend which leaves the Honda squad down to the sole entry of Ryuichi Kiyonari for the United States round.

Having initially not expected to require surgery on his shoulder, Honda has confirmed the British rider underwent an operation at specialists the Arm Clinic in Wilmslow.

In a statement released by Honda, the decision for surgery has been made to allow Camier “to fully recover movement in his shoulder” having opted against an operation and recover with physiotherapy.

But after recently riding a Supermotard bike Camier continued to suffer with his shoulder which led to further medical advice and ultimately an operation to stabilise the shoulder joint.

Camier, who underwent the operation today (July 12), will use the lengthy World Superbike championship summer break to recover from the surgery with the target of making a comeback at the Portimao round on September 6-8.
