For bikers, there are a number of dangers we must encounter on the roads. From absent-minded car drivers to diesel spills and potholes. And you can now add alligators to that list - if you live in Florida.

As reported by numerous Florida news outlets, the couple, a 67-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were taking part in a group ride on Interstate 4. Sadly, for them and the alligator, it’s mating season in most of Florida, meaning the scaly beasts are out and about looking for a mate. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the six-footer was crossing the interstate when the group of bikers arrived, with all but two managing to avoid the sharp-toothed reptilian.

The Daytona Beach News and Journal reports that the man's bike reached the woodline and even struck a tree, while the woman's machine veered off the highway and came to a stop on its own. Both were transported to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital with what the paper calls ‘non-life-threatening injuries’. The condition of the alligator isn’t know, although a specilist was called in to capture the animal and asses its condition.

It’s not uncommon for alligators to seek out a road to help them warm up after a period spent in the water. We’ll just happily chalk this up as one of the dangers we don’t have to avoid here in the UK. Thankfully, our potholes don’t have nearly a hundred teeth.
