A speed camera in Kirkby-in-Ashfield is reported to have captured 41,675 motorists since its installation in August 2023. Had all fines been collected, the single site could have dragged in more than £4 million in fines.

The news comes from NottinghamshireLive, thanks to a freedom of information request (FOI) submitted by local man, Gary Eyre, who is reported to have submitted it due to the vast number of people he knew who had been caught.

The camera is located on the A38, which, at the site of the camera, is mostly a four-lane road (three eastbound, one westbound), although with no central dividing reservation. The speed limit on this part of the road is 30mph, which the police say is down to a fatal accident taking place there, along with several crashes that resulted in “serious injury”. NottsLive also reports that there is a large number of school children who use the area, which adds up as Ashfield School is nearby.

As reported, the camera could have netted around £4.1 million in fines from this site alone, although the police have claimed that nearly half of all offences resulted in a speed awareness course, not a fine. A spokesperson for the police also confirmed that offences at the location dropped from a staggering 450 a day to just 60.

Speaking to NottsLive, Inspector Simon Allen, of Nottinghamshire Police, said. “Like all safety cameras in the UK, this unit is in place to reduce speed and prevent road traffic collisions, not to catch people speeding. As soon as this unit was installed, it was clear to us that a high number of people were exceeding the speed limit at this junction.”
