THE BMW R nineT retro naked range has been given a refresh for 2021 with changes to the exterior and also beneath the skin.

First up is the engine, which remains at 1,170cc but now gains Euro5 compliance. The heads have been redesigned both inside and out, with a new turbulence system being used to swirl the mixture to ensure improved combustion and increased torque in the mid-range. Power has dropped slightly when compared to the previous model, down from 110hp to 109hp, although the boost to the bikes mid-range should do well to hide this.

The exterior of the R nineT engine has been spruced up too, for both aesthetic and practical reasons. The new cylinder head flows better from the exterior to the interior cooling fins and are designed to work alongside the new throttle valve designs to improve the overall look of the engine.

All models in the range will now include ABS Pro as standard and Dynamic Braking Control. A new rear shock absorber now includes travel-dependant damping which brings with a remote preload adjuster. The range will also gain Rain and Road riding modes as standard across all models.

The electronics updates for 2021 don’t stop there, with the range now benefitting from a ride-by-wire throttle, which beings with it cruise control and the option to include the Pro riding modes as an optional extra. On the road-biased R nineT and Pure models, this gets you Dynamic mode, with a sharper throttle response and reduced traction control intervention. On the Scrambler and Urban GS models you’ll get Dirt mode which lessens the ABS intervention to the rear significantly with traction control also reduced – but not removed totally.

Aside from the technical changes, the bikes are now available in a range of new colour and decal schemes, with the “Edition 40 Years GS” of the R nineT Urban G/S being particularly eye-catching. Available as a limited edition only, this unique model comes in a colour scheme reminiscent of the R 100 GS to mark the 40th anniversary of the BMW Motorrad GS family.
