COVID-19 lockdown does not restrict recreational motorcycle riding

COMO has studied the latest legislation around the COVID-19 lockdown regulations and found that recreation motorcycle riding is permitted

THE British Motorcyclists Federations (BMF) has confirmed that recreational motorcycle use is allowed during the current COVID-19 lockdown.

The confirmation comes after the Coalition of Motorcycle Organisations (COMO) have examined the legislation and guidance information issued out by the government to combat a second COVID-19 wave.

The advice only applies to England, although the group of organisations has confirmed that as long as the rider does not have to self-isolate due to a positive COVID-19 test or due to showing symptoms of the virus, the rules do indeed allow the riding of a motorcycle for recreational purposes and nothing more.

The government has already confirmed that riding for essential purposes is allowed, although the grey area resides around riding a motorcycle mental and physical well-being.

COMO members have been studying the guidelines with a fine toothcomb and have found that riding alone, or even with a mate is allowed – so long as social distancing guidelines are adhered to. It is also advised that riding with one person from another household, or with the people you live with (your household) or your support bubble is also allowed.

What not to during the COVID-19 lockdown

There are some ‘don’ts’ that accompany the ‘dos’ though. Obviously, large group rides, congregating in groups and reckless riding will draw unwanted and negative attention, and therefore must be avoided.

The Coalition of Motorcycling Organisations membership consists of representatives from the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF), the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC), the Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF), IAM RoadSmart, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU), the Triumph Owners’ Motorcycle Club (TOMCC) and Biker Down UK.

But with respect, who is COMO? The seem to have no web site despite apparently representing major motorcycle groups and no indication has been made as to the source of legal advice given.

I'm not sure then that say that having COMO's statement on a bit of paper would save you from a fixed penalty notice and impress an officer of the law!

Now if Grant Shapps could make a statement....
