The next world’s fastest Indian?

Burt Munro’s great-nephew aiming to hit 200mph on streamlined modern Indian Scout

Spirit of Munro Indian

We’ve all seen that film with Anthony Hopkins about Kiwi land speed record racer Burt Munro (are we the only ones who get him mixed up with Rollie Free in his swimming trunks though?) The story of a home-brewed Indian Scout from New Zealand trying to get to Bonneville to set a new speed record is a corker of course. And now, Munro’s great-nephew, Lee Munro is trying to do something similar with a modern Indian.

He’s got a bit more help than his great uncle did though – Indian is backing the run, and has helped ‘refine’ the Indian Scout Streamliner Munro will ride at the 70thannual Bonnevill Speed Week later this week (August 11-17th). The Indian will run in the Modified Partial Streamliner 1350cc class, and is aiming to top 200mph.

“Indian Motorcycle was honoured to partner with the Munro family last year and pay tribute to Burt’s incredible accomplishments and land-speed record set in 1967. We’re eager to be back on the salt flats with Lee and the ‘Sprit of Munro’,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “Our engineering team led by Wayne Kolden and Dan Gervais have put long hours into developing a bike capable of hitting the 200-mph mark and we’re excited to watch Lee pursue this goal.  I would also like to thank our sponsors Cargill Station Ltd, Garry Robertson of Ocean Ridge Kaikoura New Zealand and Jerry Stinchfield of Roof Systems of Dallas, TX for helping us get to the salt.”
