MV Agusta reportedly pauses motorcycle production with CFMoto agreement in doubt

MV Agusta has reportedly halted motorcycle production at its Varese factory, after investment from China no longer appears to be forthcoming. 

According to GPOne, MV Agusta was due to receive heavy investment from CFMoto before the collapse of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which was reportedly signed in June 2026.

This was originally signed by both parties, which would have led to CFMoto buying a 49 per cent stake in MV Agusta.

A multi-million-euro restructuring would have then taken place at MV Agusta, had the agreement not been terminated, which is reported to have left the Varese-based company in major financial difficulty. 

The reports of MV Agusta pausing production come as a major surprise given the projected sales ambitions it set just last year.

After separating from KTM in 2025 following the Austrian manufacturer’s well-documented financial issues, MV Agusta revealed plans to sell 4,000 motorcycles that same year, as well as a long-term goal of 10,000.

However, reports claim that MV Agusta has struggled to meet these ambitious targets, and that so far in 2026 it has only sold 1,238 units.

When MV Agusta completed its buyback shares from KTM, Hubert Trunkenpolz, who was previously appointed CEO of the company when it was owned by KTM, was then appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors at MV Agusta Motor. Luca Martin was then promoted from Co-CEO to the new CEO of MV Agusta. 

During negotiations between MV Agusta and CFMoto, Circular Economy AG is reported to have presented an industrial plan for the future of the company. But it is now claimed that representatives from CFMoto pulled the pin on any deal due to financial demands from MV Agusta considered unreasonable. 

The agreement between MV Agusta and CFMoto was also thought to include a potential MotoGP project. 

CFMoto is still rumoured to be interested in joining MotoGP in the future, but given the termination of its agreement with MV Agusta, that will no longer be as a joint effort.
