First Look: K-Way Motus

A leaning, two seat, hybrid powered three-wheeler

THIS is the K-WAY Motus - a hybrid-powered leaning, three-wheeled two-seater that uses an internal combustion engine to power the rear wheel and a brace of electric motors to run the fronts.

A Gilera GP800 scooter engine transmits power to the rear wheel, while two modern battery-powered electric motors take care of the front two wheels. The front end features regenerative braking, which converts the kinetic energy produced during the braking process into electricity that goes to recharge the vehicle's batteries. The machine can run on just the petrol motor, just the electric motors, or all three together.

Think that's impressive? An electronic servo control unit tips the cockpit from side-to-side in order to help the Motus negotiate corners. It can lean at an angle of up to 45 degrees, with a top speed limited to 150km/h.

The machine, built in Italy, was built as a contender for the Progressive Automotive X Prize - a $10 million competition to inspire a new generation of viable, super-efficient vehicles.
