The next Bishop of Hereford is a Harley Davidson rider who also plans to jump from a plane this year for a charity skydive.

The Rt Rev Richard Jackson is currently posted in Lewes in East Sussex as the Suffragan Bishop, taking his place in Hereford in the new year.

In his outgoing diocese of East Sussex, Mr Jackson has become known as the “biking Bishop”, as he can often be seen riding around the diocese on his Fat Boy Harley Davidson motorcycle. Sometimes with his wife, Deborah, on the pillion.

Mr Jackson is due to carry out a charity skydive, splitting the money raised between the Church Urban Fund and Together in Sussex, which both help people in need.

The position dates back to 676 and the diocese includes Telford, Ludlow, Much Wenlock, Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Leominster, Bromyard and Kington. He said he was thrilled to take on the role.

The Harley-Davidson Fat Boy the bishop can be seen riding seems to be a fairly old mid-nineties version, the newer 2019 effort from H-D features a 107 or 114ci engine which puts out 145Nm of torque, 86hp and weighs in at a leg bending 317kg ready to ride.

Other new additions include revised LED headlights, matt-finished primary driver cover, single-piece billet machined wheels and an £18,295 price tag for a base model in two tone paint!

Would a biking Bishop make you want to get to church on a Sunday? Or are trackdays and motocross tracks your chosen religion!?
