Fuel Prices Drop Again – Lowest Petrol Costs in Nearly Four Years
Fuel prices fall for the third month running, with petrol now at its lowest level since 2021.

Fuel prices have fallen for the third month on the bounce, with petrol and diesel both dropping by another 2p in May, according to the latest figures from RAC Fuel Watch.
The average price of petrol now sits at 132.3p per litre – the lowest it has been since July 2021. Diesel is also down, falling to 138.4p per litre, its lowest point since September of the same year. It means filling a 55-litre petrol car now costs (on average) £72.74, and diesel will set you back £76.13. That’s about £1 less than April and £4 cheaper than just three months ago.
Supermarkets, as usual, are leading the charge on savings. Sainsbury’s is selling unleaded at 129p per litre, while diesel is averaging 135p. Northern Ireland’s forecourts are even cheaper: petrol is going for just 126.5p, and diesel at 130.8p.

There are also some standout deals if you’re willing to go a little out of your way. Sainsbury’s in Huddersfield (Southgate) has petrol at 121.9p per litre, while Asda in Park Royal, London, is offering it at 122.7p. Tesco’s Greenford site is also close behind at 123.9p. Diesel is cheapest in Belfast at Sainsbury’s Falls Road store, where it’s priced at 126.9p. Asda in Coleraine, Cookstown, and Breck Road (Liverpool) aren’t far off either.
RAC’s head of policy, Simon Williams, said drivers are finally seeing the benefits of a relatively stable oil market, with prices dropping back to where they were four years ago – helped along, of course, by the ongoing fuel duty cut introduced in 2022.
“There are some real bargains out there if you’re prepared to shop around,” said Williams. “With oil averaging $64 a barrel through May, there’s still room for pump prices to fall even further – ideally to under 130p for petrol and 134p for diesel.”
Drivers keen to save more are being urged to download the myRAC app, which compares local prices and could knock a few more pounds off the cost of a full tank. Given the ongoing tensions in the Middle East which seem to have escalated in the last 24 hours, we wouldn’t bank on fuel prices staying as low as they are - it might be time to stock up!
