A replica of the Batcycle used in the first-ever Batman film in 1966 has popped up for auction in Italy, and it currently has a highest bid of €5,500 (around £4,770).

The auction, which is set to end in just over three days, says collection is preferred but not essential as shipping can be arranged. The bike has been exhibited at the Sidecar Museum of Cingoli since 2010.

If you’re a fan of the Batman movies, and you know your ‘Batmobiles’, it’s likely you will know about this particular bike and what makes it so special, aside from being the first-ever Batman motorcycle.

That’s because it was originally set to be a customized Harley-Davidson with the windshield turned into a shape resembling bat wings. However, the bike proved too heavy and slow, so the filmmakers decided to find a more agile and responsive vehicle for the different action scenes.

That’s where the 2T 250cc twin-cylinder Yamaha comes in as it was eventually picked as the bike for the movie. In typical Batman fashion, the bike could not be complete without a sidecar for his sidekick, Robin.

This is a true collector’s item, and the listing clearly states that “the vehicle is not approved for road circulation”. It also says an original Yamaha engine is used but “not functioning”. It’s claimed to have minimal signs of oxidation on the handlebar and exhausts. There is however a small crack in the fiberglass at the front.

You can find out more about the bike and how to bid by heading over to the Catawiki auction website.
