Simple but effective tools that do not cost the earth are few and far between. The Clarke CAT212 4 Piece Multi Nozzle Air Blow Gun Kit is one such bit of kit. No, seriously. Until you own an air blow gun, you’ll probably never figure how useful a blow gun is. So, what’s the score?

An air blow gun is literally that: a pistol-shaped hand tool that, when connected to a compressor – in our case the Visordown lockup’s Clarke SHHH50/350 Shhh Air Max oil-free compressor, fires air through an exit nozzle. This blast of high-pressure air is controlled by a trigger, enabling short or protracted blasts. Top five uses for an air blow gun in the biking world are:

  1. Clean, as in remove insects and other airborne crud, air filters, paper or mesh
  2. Blow dry parts that have been washed/cleaned; think switchgear and connectors, where water always sits and corrodes contacts and terminal pins
  3. Blow off water/dust from areas that are otherwise inaccessible to hands and cloths
  4. Assist brake caliper piston removal when used with a sealing O-ring or rubber block: care must be taken to avoid a flying piston when it breaks free from a swollen caliper seal/corrosion with 60psi behind it
  5. Unblock carb airways and jets or any other pipes or vessels that do not react so well to sharp bits of metal, wire brushes and so on.

As the name suggests, the Clarke CAT212 4 Piece Multi Nozzle Air Blow Gun Kit is three air blow guns in one. The lightweight “pistol” accepts one of three different supplied nozzle lengths, which are easily swapped out. The short one is good for close battles with stubborn caliper pistons and blowing debris off a workbench. The other two work best for perfectly placing short bursts of air, e.g. clearing out re-tapped thread holes. Or blasting dirty water from the back of a cylinder block without removing an acre of bodywork. And yes, the pistol grip comes with the universal 1/4in thread connector for airline connectors. If value for money is your bag, then £11.98 (inc VAT) for the Clarke 4 Piece Multi Nozzle Air Blow Gun Kit will make you smile.
