Somkiat Chantra has undergone arm pump surgery after KTM star Pedro Acosta had the same procedure following last weekend’s Spanish MotoGP at Jerez.

It’s been a difficult start to 2025 for Chantra, but things got worse for the Thai rider in Jerez as he was forced to stop the Grand Prix after 14 laps due to the issue.

While arm pump has often been a problem for MotoGP riders, the tight and twisty nature of the Spanish circuit means riders can often suffer from it more than at other tracks.

A statement from the LCR Honda team said: “Idemitsu Honda LCR rider Somkiat Chantra underwent successful surgery on the afternoon of April 30 at Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona to treat arm pump.

“The procedure was performed by renowned doctor Dr. Xavier Mir. The operation went smoothly, and Somkiat is now beginning his recovery process. He has already been discharged from the hospital and is continuing his rehabilitation in Barcelona.

“Next Tuesday, he will undergo a medical check-up to assess his condition, as he awaits clearance to be declared fit to ride. He is now focused on making a full recovery ahead of the upcoming grand prix in Le Mans.”

Prior to Wednesday’s operation for Chantra, Acosta also underwent surgery for the same problem despite taking part in Monday’s one-day test and finishing fifth fastest.

Compartment syndrome is commonly known as arm pump and it tends to happen when repeated physical stress restricts blood flow to the forearm, which results in a loss of strength and feeling.

Despite suffering from this issue and having surgery on Tuesday, Acosta is expected to race at the French MotoGP at Le Mans on 9-11 May, as is the case for Chantra.

"Pedro Acosta underwent successful surgery this evening on his right forearm to treat chronic compartment syndrome," KTM announced. "He’ll remain under observation for 24 hours and is expected to return for the French GP, pending a medical check next week."
