Thailand to host first 850cc MotoGP race of 2027

MotoGP will return to Thailand for the third consecutive year as its season opener, but this time doing so with 850cc machinery. 

This was confirmed as part of a press release by MotoGP, with the Chang International Circuit set to host round one of the season on March 5-7.

By hosting the 2027 season opener, the Buriram-based circuit will give us a first look at the new 850cc machines under racing conditions.

MotoGP is gearing up for one of the biggest changes the sport has ever seen, not just because of the new engines, but because of the extensive list of regulation tweaks. This includes 100 per cent sustainable fuel being used for the first time, restrictions on the use of aerodynamics, a ban on all ride-height devices, and a switch from Michelin to Pirelli rubber.  

MotoGP, like Formula 1 since the series’ ownership was taken over by Liberty Media, has seen its race calendar expand with new venues in different countries. However, many circuits on the current calendar have become mainstay venues, with Thailand firmly falling into that bracket.

The 2026 Thai MotoGP produced record-breaking attendance figures specific to this event, with 228,228 people attending over the three days in 2026. 

Speaking about the decision to keep Thailand as the season opener for the new era of MotoGP, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta said: 

“Hosting the MotoGP season opener for a third consecutive year is a testament to the outstanding partnership we have built in Thailand and the incredible passion of the fans. Buriram has consistently delivered one of the best events on our calendar, making it the perfect venue to launch MotoGP's new technical era. The first race under the 2027 regulations will mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our sport, and we're delighted to start that journey in Thailand."
