Race 2 - Razgatlioglu confirms triple race win, Bautista crowned champion

Race Two

Toprak Razgatlioglu started from the pole position he had earned earlier on Sunday in the Superpole Race in the second full race in Indonesia, while Alvaro Bautista looked set to clinch the title, entering the final race of the penultimate round with a 71-point lead over the Turkish rider.

Race two in Mandalika began with yet another Toprak Razgatlioglu holeshot from pole position, but he ran wide and gave the lead to Jonathan Rea, while Andrea Locatelli was third, from Bautista in fourth.

The front four had already broken away from the rest of the pack behind by lap three, but the pace at the front was not too hot, and Bassani was able to catch the back of the group. Bassani soon made it a four-rider group again, though, with a move on Locatelli which somewhat detached his compatriot.

Razgatlioglu took the lead for the first time since the opening corner on lap five, and already in the middle of lap six Rea had been dropped back to third by Bautista. At the beginning of lap seven, Rea was fourth as Bassani went through.

Rea was able to respond to Bassani with 11 laps to go, but by now the gap to the leading two was over one second.

Bautista used the Ducati power to level Razgatlioglu into turn one with eight laps to go, and for half-a-lap he had the lead. Razgatlioglu responded at turn 10, but Bautista came back again into the penultimate corner.

The fighting brought Rea back to within half-a-second of the front two, and although Bautista was able to lead for a whole lap he was unable to get away from the two behind him.

Razgatlioglu reclaimed the lead at turn 10 with six laps to go and pushed the pace. He set the fastest lap of the race on the next tour, and suddenly there were three laps to go and the gap between the front two was over one second.

In the final lap, Razgatlioglu secured his third win of the weekend for his second career treble, but behind it was a second place for Alvaro Bautista, which was enough for him to clinch his first WorldSBK title, and Ducati's first since 2011.

In third place was Jonathan Rea, while Andrea Locatelli took fourth place back from Axel Bassani in the closing stages. The #47 confirmed a top five, while Scott Redding completed the top six, ahead of Xavi Vierge, Garrett Gerloff, Alex Lowes and Michael Rinaldi who rounded out the top 10.

Superpole Race

Toprak Razgatlioglu started from pole position once again in the Superpole Race in Indonesia after his pole position lap in Superpole the day before. Just as on Saturday, Razgatlioglu came out the winner, but the battle was much closer in the 10-lap sprint.

Just as in race one, Razgatlioglu made the holeshot on the Yamaha, but after two laps it was already clear that the reigning world champion would face stiffer opposition on Sunday morning than he did on Saturday afternoon.

Indeed, Jonathan Rea passed for the lead on lap three, when Alvaro Bautista also set the fastest lap of the race.

On lap six, Razgatlioglu re-took the lead, and he was able to open himself a small advantage back to Rea, who himself was under pressure from Andrea Locatelli on the second of the factory Yamahas.

The race boiled down to a somewhat anti-climactic ending, with Ragatlioglu staying just out of Rea's reach in the final laps, and the #65 Kawasaki rider also able to pull away from Locatelli. The Italian held onto the podium ahead of Bautista, who had to wait until the at least race two in Mandalika before finalising the world title aftr finishing fourth in the Superpole Race.

Axel Bassani completed the top five, ahead of Scott Redding, Alex Lowes, Michael Rinaldi, Xavi Vierge, and Michael van der Mark who completed the top 10, but missed out on a top-three grid slot for race two.

Race 1

Toprak Razgatlioglu started race one in Indonesia from pole position after a savage display of speed in Superpole. Alvaro Bautista, who could take the title with the correct result in race one, started in the middle of the second row in fifth.

It was Razgatlioglu who made the holeshot ahead of his Yamaha teammate, Andrea Locatelli, while Bautista climbed from fifth to third in the opening corners before being demoted to fourth by Jonathan Rea before the end of the first lap.

Midway through lap two, and Rea was past Locatelli for second, and a lap later the Italian was demoted to third by Bautista, while Razgatlioglu was already making a gap at the front.

Rea had tried to make a run at Razgatlioglu in the first laps, but by mid-distance he was pushed back to third by Bautista who was making his usual pace improvement into the second half of the race.

When Bautista passed Rea, he had a gap of over two seconds to Razgatlioglu, but a mistake from the Yamaha rider helped the Spaniard close in as the race entered the final 10 laps.

The reigning champion responded, though, and pushed the gap back out to over two seconds with five laps to go. By the end, his gap was over four seconds to Bautista, with over 11 seconds back to Rea in third. Simply, it was a dominant performance from the #1.

In fourth was Locatelli, although it should have been Michael Rinaldi. The #21 recovered from ninth to take fourth from his compatriot with six laps to go, but then he ran wide and gave it away again. Rinaldi finished fifth in the end, ahead of Xavi Vierge, Garrett Gerloff, Axel Bassani, Alex Lowes and Loris Baz who completed the top 10.

Superpole

Toprak Razgatlioglu came into qualifying in Indonesia as the fastest rider, having topped two of the three free practice sessions at a newly-resurfaced Pertamina Mandalika circuit where last year the Turk clinched the #1 plate for himself. Alvaro Bautista had been third fastest, but behind Andrea Locatelli, in FP3, with Razgatlioglu finishing the Saturday morning session over one second clear of the field.

Free practice had also seen the field trimmed, as Honda's Iker Lecuona was ruled unfit having fractured vertebrae in a crash on Friday.

The Pata Yamaha pairing of Razgatlioglu and Locatelli continued to set the pace when qualifying got underway, too. The pair led from Jonathan Rea after the opening laps, while Bautista provisionally headed the second row in fourth.

Razgatlioglu improved on his own fastest lap from the first run with his second tyre. An improvement of over half-a-second also broke the lap record. The speed from Razgatlioglu was simply superior. He ended qualifying over one second clear of second-placed Jonathan Rea, and over 1.4 seconds clear of Alvaro Bautista in fifth.

Andrea Locatelli will join Razgatlioglu and Rea on the front row for the first race, and Superpole Race on Sunday morning, while Bautista will be between Alex Lowes (fourth) and Axel Bassani (sixth) on row two.

The lone HRC Honda of Xavi Vierge will head up row three from Scott Redding and Michael Rinaldi, while the top 10 for Superpole is completed by Garrett Gerloff. Michael van der Mark and Philipp Oettl join the American on the fourth row.
