Portimao back on MotoGP calendar - Austin and Argentina postponed

The stunning Portimao circuit is again on the MotoGP calendar for 2021 although Austin, Argentina, and possibly Thailand are not

Portimao

PORTIMAO is on course to host its second MotoGP race in 2021, with the event scheduled to take place between the 16th and 18th of April.

Portimao was a big hit with riders and fans in 2020, with the roller-coaster-like circuit providing the kind of spectacle fans have been missing. Huge elevation changes and a largely unfamiliar surface threw open the doors of uncertainty and made for a truly epic race.

As it stands, the Portimao round could end up being the first full race we see, with news recently coming to light that a spike in cases have thrown the opening Qatar round into doubt. The Losail circuit in Doha was slated to hold the first pre-season tests, although an 85 per cent ride in COVID-19 cases in the nation is making that doubtful. After the opening tests, the Losail circuit was due to hold two events back to back, one from the 26th to 28th of March, and again on the 2nd to the 4th of April.

The win for Portimao means a loss for other tracks though, as the Austin round from the stunning COTA and the Argentine round from Termas de Río Hondo is also postponed. We are also hearing in the last few hours that the Thai round, due to take place in Buriram is also in doubt.

We’ll bring you more on that as we have it.
