Marc Marquez is to undergo surgery after it was confirmed he has suffered a fractured arm in his spectacular crash during the closing stages of the 2020 Spanish MotoGP.

The defending champion was on a charge back up through the field after an error on lap five while leading sent him off track and down to the back of the field at Turn 3.

However, having worked his way back into contention to run third with just three laps remaining, he violently high-sided at the very same turn. Coming down heavily on his side, a trip to the medical centre confirmed a fracture to his humerus.

As such, he will be taken to hospital to undergo surgery on the injury. It is not clear how long his recovery time could.

The incident could spell bad news for Marquez’s title hopes in 2020 given the concentrated season magnifying the impact of even a modest period out through injury. Round two of the season, also in Jerez, begins in just four days time.
