A challenging 2025 for new motorcycle registrations has resulted in a 19.4 per cent decrease compared to 2024.

New figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), show that new motorcycle registrations for 2025 dropped by 19.4 per cent.

New motorcycle registrations closed out 2025 at 89,160. That’s 21,484 less than in 2024, where 110,644 motorcycles were registered. The overall number of registrations for 2025, which includes motorcycles, mopeds and tricycles, came in at 93,922. That’s a fall of 19.3 per cent compared with 2024.

Those figures don’t include scooters, which is another area where sales dropped compared with 2024. A total of 22,248 scooters were sold in 2025, which is a 19.6 per cent drop from the year prior.

While a lot of individual segments suffered drops, adventure motorcycles ended the year as the most popular type of bike. A total of 20,032 new adventure bikes were sold in the UK last year, leapfrogging naked motorcycles as the most popular type of bike from 2024.

With all that said, the number of total new registrations was close to matching the end-of-year target that was outlined in November, by MCIA Chief Executive, Tony Campbell.

A target of 95,000 new registrations was forecast for the end of 2025, which is a number that proved to be out of reach by just 1,078.

Following a distortion in the market during the final few months of 2024, with Euro5+ phasing out Euro5 emission standards, Campbell says comparing 2025 with 2024’s sales numbers makes little sense. Instead he’s looking towards 2026, saying:

“The total volumes for the year closed at 93,922 very close to our early year forecast.  With many new 2026 models launched at both EICMA and our own MCL, there is much to be excited about in 2026.”

He also added:

“Low-carbon mobility is at the forefront of DfT policy and MCIA is working hard to ensure our industry is best placed to be part of solution, and with legislation being promised for Micromobility, the recently announced rider licensing and testing review, we are pushing hard to create a healthy policy environment that can support growth in our sector.”
