Motorcycle Thefts Continue to Decline
Some positive news for owners, insurers and the wider industry, as thefts continue to decline and are now at their lowest point since 2017
Motorcycle theft in the UK is at its lowest level since 2017, with the MCIA stating that motorcycle theft is down 7.9 per cent year on year compared to 2023.
The data shows a downtrend in thefts throughout 2024, with the MCIA claiming it to be the steepest decline in the number of bikes stolen than in previous years.
While a reduction in thefts is good news for all bikers, that shouldn’t be a reason to become complacent regarding the security of your bike, with the MCIA claiming it is industry initiatives, such as the MCIA Secured program, that are helping with the reduction. It also notes that public awareness of motorcycle theft is at an all-time high, no doubt helped by the power of social media, as well as closer collaboration with law enforcement teams across the country.

Speaking about the news, Tony Campbell, CEO of the MCIA said:
“The sustained decrease in motorcycle thefts is a clear indication that coordinated industry-wide efforts are yielding positive results, providing hope for even lower theft rates in the future and hopefully a reduction in insurance premiums.
“Whilst this is encouraging news, the volumes of stolen motorcycles being recovered post theft has dropped significantly, meaning it is likely more are being shipped abroad. MCIA, representing the sector, are working closely with authorities to see what can be done at the main ports in order to understand the scale of the problem and put in place measures to combat the issue.”
