Foggy seriously injured in Dirt Quake crash

FOUR-time World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty has suffered a broken shoulder blade, punctured lung and broken ribs in a crash at the Dirt Quake event in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Fogarty was a guest of honour at the dirt track races alongside Guy Martin and Neil Hodgson. After winning five out of his six heats heading into the finals, he had a heavy crash in the Hooligan race.

In an Instagram post, Fogarty later said he'd suffered two broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and a punctured lung while he promised his wife Michaela he'd never race again. He is thought to be recovering at a local Norfolk hospital.

He seemed in good humour, adding in a tweet: 'Oh the rib count is now up too 10 broke.!!'

Fogarty becomes the latest retired former World Superbike champion to suffer a nasty accident after Max Biaggi sustained thoracic trauma and multiple rib fractures in a Supermoto training accident in June. Biaggi was discharged from hospital in Italy two weeks ago on his 46th birthday and is recovering at home.

The real reason sprint cars are fast on dirt isn't 950 HP (helps) or light weight (also helps) but the massive wings that generate both downforce AND cornering force when the cars are "dirt tracking" through the corners and the contact patch the *huge* tires on a sprint car generate.
