Electric startup Verge Motorcycles has become the first motorcycle manufacturer in the world to deliver a production bike that uses a solid-state battery pack.

Verge says riders can “say goodbye to range anxiety and slow charging for good”, because its new 30kWh battery provides a mammoth 370 miles (600 km) of total range. It also means that seriously fast-charging capabilities have been unlocked, with 186 miles (300 km) of that range available in under 10 minutes of charging.

The breakthrough technology will be available on the brand’s flagship naked roadster, the TS Pro, which is currently available with a 20kWh battery pack. The 20kWh battery pack offers up to 217 miles (350 km) of total range.

One of the most significant advantages of using solid-state batteries is its safety. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, it does not catch fire, making it much safer for users especially at charging locations.

Solid-state batteries are made from a solid electrolyte, which is also thought to be more efficient than a lithium-ion battery. The latter is made from liquid or gel electrolytes. The new battery system is expected to be available in the coming months, according to Verge Motorcycles.

The first-of-its-kind battery technology has been developed and tested together with technology company, and partner, Donut Lab.

Verge revealed its most recent evolution of the TS Pro at the EICMA show in November, where it received technical updates and a new user interface.

Speaking about the use of the world’s first solid-state battery in a motorcycle, CEO of Verge Motorcycles, Tuomo Lehtimäki, said:

“The use of solid state battery technology to motorcycles in production is a historic breakthrough shaking up the entire automotive industry. Verge's close development work with Donut Lab, along with battery pack testing and validation, has reached the point where we can implement the technology in the new evolution of Verge TS Pro model, which is already in production and available on Verge’s website and in our showroom stores”.

The new solid-state battery pack was officially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 4.
