Mexico still in contention for MotoGP
'They are working with the Safety Commission. I think sooner or later we will go' – Marc Marquez.
At least four countries are currently in contention to join the MotoGP calendar in the near future.
Finland's new Kymiring will hold a test in August ahead of an expected place on the 2020 calendar, while MotoGP agreements have been reached for a return to Indonesia and Brazil should the proposed circuits be built in time for 2021.
Meanwhile Mexico, which emerged as a surprise candidate to join this season's calendar until riders called for safety changes to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez F1 circuit, could be ready for next season should the necessary modifications be made.
"We know that we have some opportunity to go really soon and of course we will be very happy to have a race in Mexico, but first of all the circuit needs to [fix] the safety issues," said world champion Marc Marquez.
"They are working with the Safety Commission. I think sooner or later we will go."
Valentino Rossi also said he would be delighted to compete in Mexico once the track's safety issues have been solved.
"Mexico is a great place, very fun," Rossi said. "But for us it is very important the track to be good, in a good condition, and especially with a good safety level. If we check this, we will come for sure."
But Cal Crutchlow said he'd be happy to race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez F1 circuit 'the way it is'.
"I’d love to go. Are we talking about the same track as the Formula 1? I like it. I think we should go the way it is and see who wants to race. Of course, if they can improve the safety it would be good," said the Englishman.
"I enjoy to watch that race in Formula 1. It’s always entertaining. It would be a good last corner. I think it’s really cool.
"I don't know if [MotoGP] will go or not. Hopefully they do."
The current MotoGP calendar stands at 19 rounds, with the most recent new addition being Thailand in 2018.
