North Yorkshire’s First Fixed Speed Camera Knocked Down On Day One

The new speed camera was installed in the village of Sherburn, although it was toppled, apparently on purpose, before it could even issue a ticket.

The first fixed speed camera in North Yorkshire has had a touch start to life, after it was flattened the day before it was due to go into service.

The camera, located in the village of Sherburn, Malton, was erected on the A64, Sherburn High Street, and was scheduled to be switched on from today, Tuesday, July 1st. That won’t be happening now, as the pole the speed camera was mounted on was knocked over, leaving the system inoperable.

The speed camera, which was supposed to be monitoring a 30mph section of road, is thought to have been toppled at some point last night (June 30), with the police believing it to be a targeted attack by vandals. “It is disappointing to see that something intended to help keep the village safe and protect members of the public has been targeted by vandals.” Said a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson, per the website, York Mix.

The police are now calling on the public to help with the enquiries, and are asking for people who may have dashcam or ring doorbell footage from around 2:20am on June 30 to supply it to them to help catch the culprits.

As for the speed camera, that is being moved to a new location in the same village, quite possibly on a lamppost that is less easily crashed into.

While the speed camera was stated to be North Yorkshire’s first ‘fixed’ system, the region does have several mobile speed camera vans which commute around so-called ‘high harm’ roads and routes. The installation of this system was intended to complement the mobile vans, and not replace them.
