Want paint on your motorcycle? That'll be another £85

Only two paint schemes are available on BMW's R1200RS and both cost extra

WE'RE used to paying extra for fancy electronics but this is the first time we've heard of a motorcycle price that doesn't include paint.

BMW's newly launched R1200RS comes in only two colour options and both cost extra on top of the 'base' price of £10,835.

You can have metallic blue and light grey (pictured) for an extra £85 or metallic grey and black for an extra £320. No other colours are listed either on BMW's website or in the price lists.

According to BMW's price announcement, these are the colour options available 'initially', which could indicate an alternative, free paint scheme will come later. In the meantime, it looks like paint costs extra. We've asked BMW for clarification.

The firm's price announcement said: 'The base model R 1200 RS will be available from £10,835 OTR... The R 1200 RS will initially be available in two metallic colour schemes: Lupin blue metallic / light grey metallic (£85) paint finish or Granite grey metallic / Blackstorm metallic (£320) finish.'

Read our review of the new R1200RS, in which we list the base price as £10,920, since we expect you'll be wanting some paint on there.

It's not clear what you get for the supposedly on-the-road base price. We've asked BMW for clarification.

According to a BMW dealer we contacted, the firm typically charges extra for metallic paint. The pricing announcement said the two metallic options were all that's available 'initially' so it's possible a non-metallic scheme will come later - although the dealer thought it unlikely.

In the meantime, it looks like paint on the sports tourer costs extra.
