The Piaggio Group has reported an increase in annual sales for 2019 with Aprilia and Moto Guzzi in particular delivering impressive results for the Italian firm.

In all, Piaggio shifted 611,300 units in 2019, compared with 603,600 in 2018, representing a 1.3% increase year-on-year.

Though this number includes Piaggio’s commercial vehicle range, 399,600 of these represented two-wheel sales with each of its brands – Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Vespa, Gilera and Derbi – showing gains around the world. However, it is its larger displacement motorcycle range that stood out for the group with sales soaring by 25%.

The impressive results were largely spurred on by the success of the Moto Guzzi V85 TT adventure bike which has become a strong seller in Europe, while the Aprilia SX 125, RSV4 1000 and Shiver were also singled out for making a significant contribution to the overall total.

As ever though it is Piaggio’s domination in the scooter segment that continues to provide the bedrock of the group’s profit margins, especially in North America where its market share is now up to a massive 23.7%, while sales of the Piaggio MP3 three-wheeler have also shown a marked increase over the past year.

Despite a slowdown in India affecting all manufacturers, Piaggio also revealed its sales increased 14.5% in the Asian-Pacific market last year

Going forward, Piaggio will bring an updated version of its Medley scooter to market this year, together with the new Aprilia RS 600 middleweight supersports bike and the Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel.
