The GS Trophy is a celebration of the spirit of the BMW GS and will take place in Mongolia this year

Team UK ready for BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2018

AS UK GS RIDERS prepare for this year’s BMW Motorrad GS Challenge, the winners of last year’s event are heading off to compete in the real deal.

Craig Keyworth, Peter Twigg, and Peter Urquhart won the GS Trophy UK Qualifier on late May Bank Holiday last year, and with it the opportunity to represent Team UK at the sixth edition of the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy in Mongolia.

They are currently preparing to leave for Mongolia, where their skills, endurance and team spirit will be pushed to the limit as they tackle a series of tests on demanding terrain. Mountains, deserts and the vast Mongolian Steppe (high-altitude grasslands) await them and the ever-capable R1200GS.

Climbing to 1,500m above sea level, the team will face 0ºC nights and 25ºC days, with high winds and dust storms likely.

A week today, on Friday June 1, they will arrive at the HQ in Ulaanbataar for rider briefings and bike allocations. Two days later, on 3 June, they will begin their adventure.

Britain came joint second with Germany in the 2016 South East Asia edition of the GS Trophy, and the 2018 team, who have trained under Dakar Legend Simon Pavey, hope to better this.

Team member Craig Keyworth commented: “The team and I are excited to be heading to Mongolia to ride the R 1200 GS, representing the UK, in a location many people only dream about riding. We have all put in a lot of work with our training, we’re going there to win!”

Simon Pavey added: “Craig, Peter, and Peter have all put in the hours in training and we’ve given them a few extra tips and tricks to help them get Team UK to the top of the standings. The GS Trophy is always a close event, but Team UK are in with a good chance again this year.”
