The North Lincolnshire road racer is the current bookies’ favourite to replace Evans with Ladbrokes offering odds of 5/1, ahead of comedian Steve Coogan at 7/1 and X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary at 10/1.
Actor Philip Glenister is rated at 16/1, as is Vicky Butler-Henderson, while the odds on former Ukip leader Nigel Farage taking over the flagship BBC programme are 100/1.
Ladbrokes is also offering 25/1 odds on Jeremy Clarkson returning to the show to replace Evans, who stepped down after just one series.
A spokeswoman for the bookie said “Evans had a rough ride as Top Gear host and the early betting points towards Martin or Coogan filling the void.”
Martin was first tipped to become a Top Gear host following the sacking of Jeremy Clarkson for physically attacking a producer. The road racer said in March that he was happy to have turned the role down.
