Royal Enfield’s foray into the world of electric motorcycles appears to be right around the corner, according to the company’s CEO B. Govindarajan. Reported by the Financial Times, the development of its first electric bike is said to be at an advanced stage.

The market for electric bikes has somewhat stagnated in recent times, with costs proving to be a major stumbling block. Still, it’s no surprise to see Royal Enfield blow off the cobwebs and thrust themselves into the mix in the hope of becoming a leading force in the EV world. But what can we expect from its soon-to-be launched electric bike?

Well, for starters it’s believed that two types of electric bikes are currently under development at Royal Enfield, including an electric Himalayan bike which was shown as a prototype in 2023. But the other, according to Cycle World, is thought to be a “lightweight, city-orientated” urban mobility solution. It’s the second of the two bikes that’s expected to drop first and two names appear to be contenders when it comes to the official name of the model. The first is 'Flying Flea' which has been the subject of various trademark applications from Royal Enfield, perhaps making it the favourite, while the name 'Royal Babe-E' has also been floated.

In terms of style of the bike, Royal Enfield’s CEO told the Financial Times: “Our focus will be on a gorgeous-looking, very differentiated electric vehicle,” before adding, “no one is making money in the electric world as of now . . . the cost of an electric vehicle is rapidly changing. In a year’s time, when we enter with the product, we’ll be competitive.”

Royal Enfield sales in India have gone through the roof in recent years, and Govindarajan wants to capitalise on the demand for its bikes, saying: “India is very committed as a country on the technology adoption.” Falling costs is one of the reasons why the company will look to launch its first electric bike in the next financial year, which starts in April 2025.
