Did you know that Ducati was originally set up as a radio company? Or that its founding took place - probably just coincidentally - on the United States’ Independence Day? Or that it didn’t produce its first full motorcycle until 1949?

All this and more are things you can learn via the Italian brand’s new history-focused Instagram account: @museoducati

As Ducati nears its 100th anniversary (as a concept - not so much as a maker of motorcycles) it is seeking to draw attention to its rich history via the online efforts of the Ducati Museum.

Ducati describes its Instagram account as “a digital space designed to preserve and share the historical, engineering and sporting heritage of the Borgo Panigale brand with the global community of enthusiasts and with new generations.”

At present, the account doesn’t offer much - certainly not anything close to what you’d experience by visiting the Ducati Museum and Factory in Borgo Panigale, Italy. But, hey, at least you save €18 on the price of entry (not to mention the cost of getting there).

One thing the account does show so far is the Ducati 60 , the first motorcycle entirely produced by the Borgo Panigale company in 1949.

You also get a photo of Antonio Cavalieri Ducati, who, along with his sons Adriano, Bruno and Marcello, founded the Società Scientifica Radio Brevetti Ducati. The company was founded on 4 July 1926 and initially specialised in radio communication technologies.

They chose to make a dramatic pivot after the Second World War and began producing the Cucciolo - a small external engine for bicycles.

“From that moment on, the Company began a journey of research, evolution and continuous innovation that has led it to establish itself as one of the most prestigious companies of Made in Italy today,” says a typically grandiloquent Ducati media release. “[Ducati is] capable of creating motorcycles that are a magical combination of sophisticated technology and sensual beauty, on the road and on the track.”
