Maverick Vinales has made his claim for victory at the Dutch MotoGP by topping morning warm-up by a useful margin over a resurgent Andrea Dovizioso on the Ducati.

The Monster Yamaha rider produced an impressive pace using a medium-hard Michelin tyre combination to lead the session before notching up a last flying lap of 1m 33.677s to pull out over three-tenths of a second on nearest challenger Dovizioso.

The Italian rider followed Vinales and Suzuki’s Alex Rins on his fastest lap towards the end of warm-up, gaining a vital tow in the process, as he looks to fight from 11th place on the starting grid at Assen.

Dutch MotoGP pole-sitter Fabio Quartararo had a somewhat restrained warm-up, opting not to head out for the opening eight minutes of the short 20-minute session, before charging up to the order to third place using the same medium-hard tyre combination as Vinales on his Petronas Yamaha.

MotoGP world championship lead Marc Marquez ended warm-up in the same place as his qualifying result with fourth for Repsol Honda ahead of Rins who starts today’s race one spot ahead in third place.

Pol Espargaro caught the eye on the Red Bull KTM by moving up to sixth place in warm-up ahead of LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami and Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci.

With Joan Mir (Suzuki) and Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha) rounding out the top 10, it left Jack Miller narrowly missing out for Pramac Ducati but ahead of LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow.

After a disaster in qualifying, Valentino Rossi’s fortunes failed to change down in 13th place in warm-up, only ahead of Francesco Bagnaia compared to his starting position for the race, as Aprilia’s Andrea Iannone rounded out the top 15.
