Pedro Acosta will undergo surgery this week after suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome in his throttle hand at the Dutch MotoGP

Acosta pulled off-track during the closing stages of Sunday’s race, after losing feeling in three fingers on his right hand, which he later admitted is worse at some tracks than others.

Sunday’s non-finish means Acosta has now retired from three of the last five Grand Prix, two of which were heavily impacted by technical gremlins with his RC16 KTM machine.

In Barcelona, Acosta suffered a technical issue while leading, which resulted in Alex Marquez hitting his KTM from behind, causing one of the worst accidents in MotoGP, recently. Acosta then slowed on the final lap of the Czech MotoGP with another bike issue.

At first glance, Sunday’s race at Assen appeared to be a similar issue for Acosta, before the KTM star was seen shaking out his right hand. Speaking after the race, Acosta said:

“I lost feeling in three fingers on the right hand. In some tracks it is worse than others but I was suffering from the morning. I knew my level today but wanted to see. Today was not a disaster but I think the top six was possible today. I had some locking and it was better to stop. On Tuesday we’ll have surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome.”

Acosta’s poor run of results, mostly due to bad luck, means his 2026 title hopes have begun to fade quickly. Acosta is now 60 points off the championship lead, which is held by Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martin.

Acosta’s MotoGP future was finally confirmed prior to the weekend, with the Spaniard joining Ducati for the 2027 season. Acosta will partner nine-time world champion Marc Marquez, with Francesco Bagnaia switching to Aprilia to replace Martin, who is expected to join Yamaha.
