The Norfolk Motorcycle Museum has been the victim of a break-in this month, with two classic two-stroke machines stolen by thieves.

The bikes lost in the break-in are a Suzuki AP50 and a Honda SS50, which, given the other, more valuable machines located at the museum, are slightly curious models to steal. The particular theft of two small-capacity two-stroke motorcycles raises the question of whether the theft was specifically targeting these individual machines.

A post on the Norfolk Motorcycle Museum Facebook page reads:

“BREAK IN ALERT!!”

“We've had a break in at the Norfolk motorcycle museum between 1am and 2 am on Friday 17th to Saturday 18th. It looks to be a targeted theft of a Suzuki AP50 and a Honda SS50. Please let us know if anyone has any information! We are a charity so losing these might belong to a patron of the museum.”

Both the AP50 and SS50 are lightweight 50cc motorcycles that were front and centre in the 1970s UK “sports moped” boom - a segment that was headed by the Yamaha FS1E. Those riders who honed their riding craft on those models back in the day are now older, more wealthy, and looking to rekindle their relationship with the machines that launched their riding journey. That means good used examples can change hands for between £5,000 and £10,000. The potential value of the bikes, and their lightweight, making them easier to steal, backs up the stolen for order theory.

The museum is now asking the public to keep an eye out for both the bikes, and to pass on any information to them on either email (norfolkmcmuseum@tiscali.co.uk) or phone – 01692 406 266.
