Fuel Finder aims to save you cash at the pumps

At its heart, the Fuel Finder scheme is a system to clean up forecourt pricing and clarity, while ultimately helping motorists to save cash.

Petrol station forecourts are in the spotlight today, as a new government tool designed to save motorists cash launches. Fuel Finder now means that every forecourt in the UK has to submit daily pricing updates, with changes to fuel pricing required by law within 30-minutes.

The system means motorists can select the petrol station in their area that is offering the best price for consumers, and then use their favoured sat-nav or app to navigate to the forecourt.

Aside from easily pointing motorists to the cheapest forecourt in their area, the scheme is hoped to increase competition between retailers. Wholesale fuel prices fluctuate; however, in recent years, when the price has dropped, those savings haven’t always made it to consumers' pockets. With all consumers now able to see which of their local fuel retailers is offering the best price, business at that location should increase, pushing competitors to also look at price reductions.

How does the Fuel Finder scheme work, and how can I use it?

Despite being a government-proposed scheme, there isn’t a central government app or webpage you can visit. Instead, FF relies on existing mapping apps and software, such as Google Maps and Waze, to provide the pricing and facility information to the user. That information is provided by the garage operators, and while this has been happening for a while now, this is the first time disclosure has been mandatory.

On top of popular mapping and navigation apps, the system can be accessed via the Petrol Prices, RAC and AA apps.

Speaking about the launch, RAC head of policy, Simon Williams, said:

“We hope this is the start of the journey to cheaper fuel prices around the UK. The Government has set up this scheme with the intention of increasing competition among retailers to give drivers better value at the pumps. As a growing number of the country’s 8,300 forecourts submit their prices on a daily basis, drivers will be able to easily find the cheapest forecourts near them using their favoured app or sat-nav."
