54 years 8 monthsONE of the most talked-about adventure motorcycles of the last five years has finally landed. Be it the outlandish styling, or merely the fact it was built at all, the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 is a bike that drives conversation and divides opinion.
To find out what the main talking points of the bike are, we headed off to Wales, for a one-day mini-adventure. To start with, we rode the top-spec Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special on road around the stunning Lake Vyrnwy and the surrounding area. Then the afternoon was spent sampling the new Pan America at the technical and challenging Mick Extance Adventure Experience.
Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 – Adaptive Ride Height
As the Pan America 1250 Special was the bike we were to try out, it meant the machine could be spec’d with H-D’s headline piece of technology, Adaptive Ride Height. The system opens the door to adventure bike riding, to those (like myself) that are a little vertically challenged! The ride height of the bike reduces when the bike slows and comes to a stop, allowing the rider to place both feet safely on the floor. Once the bike picks up speed again, the bike rises back up, returning the machine to its natural ground height.
Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 – Revolution Max 1250
The second big question that we all wanted to answer was in relation to one of the most exciting engines that Harley-Davidson has ever produced. Making a claimed 150bhp and 94lb-ft of torque, the Revolution Max 1250 is an H-D engine, but not as we know it. With VVT, stressed member design and construction, and water cooling, the new powerplant is being heralded as the item that will help to carry the brand into a brave new world.
