Buddy Holly’s 1958 Ariel Cyclone up for auction
Estimated to go for up to £620,000
ONLINE auction house Invaluable has announced that a 1958 Ariel Cyclone that belonged to Buddy Holly will soon go under the hammer.
The Ariel will go up for auction 5 October at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Bidding starts at $50,000 (£31,000) but it has been estimated the bike could be sold for up to $1,000,000 (£620,000).
Guernsey's Auctioneers say: ‘The Ariel remains beautifully preserved and symbolic of a pivotal time in American music history, still with just over 4,000 original miles and not having been ridden for over 20 years.’
The 1958 Cyclone is part of the ‘Remembering Waylon’ auction, which will feature over 2,000 items previously owned by singer-songwriter and actor Waylon Jennings.
The motorcycle was given to Jennings as a 42nd birthday present in 1979 by the two surviving members of Buddy Holly’s band, The Crickets, 20 years after Holly died in a plane crash.
CEO of Invaluable, Rob Weisberg, said: ‘Buddy Holly was such an important icon in the music industry, and it's a thrill to have his beloved Ariel Cyclone available for online bidding. ‘
