Jonathan Rea brushed off a mid-race mistake to secure his second WorldSBK win of the San Juan Villicum weekend in Argentina, bringing his season tally up to 14.

Fresh from his victory in the shorter Superpole Race, Rea picked up a full complement of points for the final race of an ill-tempered weekend despite briefly losing the lead to Bautista when he made a mistake on lap seven.

Indeed, Rea looked to be well on course for victory after getting the hole-shot from pole position and eking out a comfortable lead over Bautista, only to run well wide at Turn 8 on Lap 8, and gift the advantage to his erstwhile title rival.

However, Rea regrouped and dispatched Bautista again only a lap later, just as the Spaniard looked to be struggling with rear tyre wear. His misfortune elevated a feisty Chaz Davies into second place, the Welshman making strong progress to secure only his eighth WorldSBK podium of the year.

Davies’ positive result comes on a weekend that saw the Ducati rider – along with five others – refuse to compete in race one on safety grounds.

With Bautista dropping back to fifth position by the chequered flag, Toprak Razgatlioglu clawed back third to complete a trio of podiums finishes, while Yamaha’s Michael van der Mark also got the better of the Spaniard late on.

Alex Lowes endured a lonely race in sixth, ahead of Eugene Laverty, who produced one of his best results of the season on the Go Eleven Ducati to prevail in an enthralling tussle with local rider Leandro Mercado, who made superb gains from last on the grid to finish eighth on the Orelac Kawasaki.

Jordi Torres got the better of fellow Kawasaki rider Leon Haslam, ahead of a fading Michael Ruben Rinaldi

Loris Baz ended a bruising weekend with points in 12th, ahead of Leon Camier, Marco Melandri and Sandro Cortese.
