Macau GP Qualifying Results: Peter Hickman on pole, Rutter closes gap

Peter Hickman holds onto pole position for the 2019 Macau GP street race, holding off a vastly improving Michael Rutter in qualifying

Peter Hickman - Bathams BMW

Peter Hickman held onto his provisional top spot in second qualifying for the 2019 Macau GP to secure pole position for the street race event.

The Isle of Man TT winner and British Superbike front runner blew the opposition away in Qualifying 1 with a lap that put him a massive 1.7secs clear around the streets of the Portuguese colony, located close to Hong Kong.

Though Bathams BMW rider didn’t improve on his 2m 25.100s lap in the second session – held in cooler morning climes than Q1 – it was still enough to secure pole position, giving him a good shot at a fourth Macau GP win in five years.

Making up 1.5secs on his team-mate between the sessions, Michael Rutter riding the Bathams Honda RC213V fell short of Hickman by 0.2secs but will feel better prepared for a victory challenge come the race.

David Johnson also made a significant improvement overnight to lead the best of the rest on the Paul Bird Motorsport Ducati Panigale V4 R, the Aussie getting the better of team-mate John McGuinness in fourth.

Lee Johnston gets underway in fifth place on his Ashcourt BMW, ahead of Horst Saiger, Emo Kostamo and Gary Johnson.
