Sales of BMW motorcycles and scooters grew by almost 6% globally in 2019 following a new model offensive, according to the German firm.

The Munich marque shifted 175,162 units worldwide, a 5.8% increase on the previous year when it sold 165,566 motorcycles. It is the ninth year in succession BMW has posted record sales figures.

BMW maintained its grip on various sales charts in Europe, topping the tables in both its domestic German market and also Italy, where the R 1250 GS is the best-selling model.

Indeed, the R 1200/1250 GS/Adventure models accounted for a vast portion of sales – around a third of all motorcycles sold in 2019 - with 59,000 units leaving dealerships.

“2019 was another very successful year for BMW Motorrad in spite of a number of challenges,” said Dr Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad. “We achieved a sales record for the ninth time in succession.

“I would like to thank our customers all over the world most sincerely for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2019. The 2019 sales figures clearly show that our motorcycle growth strategy is taking effect.

In all, sales in Germany rose by +10.4% with 26,292 units sold, with France, Italy, Spain and Great Britain all posting positive gains too to contribute to the company’s worldwide growth.

It wasn’t all good news though with the United States and Canada hitting 15,116 together, whereas the USA alone managed 13,000 sales in 2018.

What will BMW be launching 2020?

With BMW Motorrad working towards the goal of 200,000 annual sales, it will take steps towards that in 2020 with another raft of new models for 2020.

Leading that will be the new BMW F 900 R and F 900 XR, plus the latest edition of the BMW S1000 XR, plus the brand-new cruiser flagship, the R 18 which was revealed in concept form at EICMA 2019.
