Honda Unveils Electric Sports Bike at Beijing Motor Show

The new Honda electric motorcycle follows the EV Fun naked and EV Urban scooter we saw at EICMA last year

Honda looks to finally be taking battery-powered bikes a bit more seriously, as an unnamed electric sports bike concept is revealed at the Beijing Motor Show in China.

Honda revealed a raft of exciting new concepts at EICMA in 2024, including two new electric bikes, the EV Fun naked and EV Urban scooter, as well as its wild V3 platform that is boosted by an electrically driven turbo. Following on from the two electric models is this, a radical-looking, and as yet unnamed, electric sports bike.

Very little is known about the model at the time of writing, although from checking out the images from the event, it’s clear that some of the chassis elements found on the EV Fun concept are being carried over. The swingarm, for example, looks to be a very similar, if not identical, single-sided item as found on the naked bike. The forks (albeit shrouded on the new concept) and brakes also look the same as found on the EV Fun.

The biggest visual change, though, is the svelte fairing, which is interesting in its design, thanks to most of it being made from transparent plastic. That means you can see through the fairing at the chassis and frame beneath, and as with the swing arm, forks and brakes, it leads us to believe that much of the battery and frame are the same as the EV Fun - pictured above.

Should that be the case, the new EV could have a very similar technical specification to the existing EV Fun. That should mean the battery will be compatible with the CCS2 quick chargers (the same as four-wheeled EVs), and the cruising range could be in the region of 100km or 60 miles.

The flow of new electric concepts from Honda is part of the Japanese giant’s plan to massively increase its footprint in the battery bike sector. In 2022, Honda unveiled plans to release 10 new electric bikes by 2025, all forming part of its plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Ten new models, all in the same style as the EV Fun and this latest EV concept, would be a big ask, and as such we expect most of those new bikes to be coming from the lightweight electric moped and scooter segment. Not only are those smaller, more lightweight, urban commuters cheaper and easier to develop than large capacity e-bikes, but the lightweight segment is one of the best-performing, especially in markets such as Asia, where the uptake of electric motorcycle use is much higher than in Europe and the USA.
