Honda is gearing up to test its 2027 MotoGP prototype as part of a two-day test on Wednesday and Thursday at the Sepang International Circuit, in Malaysia.

It means Honda will also debut its brand-new 850cc engine, according to reports, making it the second brand to do so after KTM recently debuted its new power unit at Jerez.

The switch from 1000cc to 850cc engines marks one of the biggest regulation changes ever in MotoGP, which will take place alongside various other tweaks to how teams go racing. Reduced aerodynamics, a ban on ride-height devices, the use of 100 per cent non-fossil fuel are some of the other high-profile changes set to take place.

Pirelli is also going to replace Michelin as the sole tyre provider for MotoGP, with the latter instead heading over to World Superbike where it replaces Pirelli.

But back to this week’s test for Honda, which is a very significant one as the Japanese company is attempting to balance its 2027 development, while still improving its new 2026 prototype.

Test rider Aleix Espargaro is set to lead the development of next year’s machine, while Takaaki Nakagami will be carrying out most of the work when it comes to the 2027 bike.

According to reports from Motorsport.com, the new 850cc engine will be mounted inside a base bike and it will use tyres that Pirelli is developing for its MotoGP debut in 2027.

What this test will also give Honda is a head start over its rivals (except KTM) when it comes to testing the new Pirelli tyres. Ducati, Aprilia and Yamaha are not expected to test Pirelli’s MotoGP rubber until 2026.

Pirelli is expecting to carry out two tests with 2027 prototypes and the full line-up of MotoGP riders in 2026, with the first of those earmarked for June. The other is expected to take place in September.
