FIM World Supercross cancels British GP as investment talks continue
The FIM World Supercross Championship has cancelled its 10 October British GP in Birmingham as SX Global continues talks over new investment.
The FIM World Supercross Championship has cancelled its British GP, with the Birmingham round scheduled for 10 October no longer going ahead.
SX Global, the promoter behind the championship, says the decision has been made while it continues discussions to secure “significant new investment” for World Supercross.
The company says the investment process is progressing positively, but that completing a deal requires further time and due diligence. As a result, it has taken what it describes as “short-term operational measures”, including pulling the plug on the UK round.
The Birmingham event was due to be one of the championship's headline races, but fans who had already bought tickets will now receive an email from Ticketmaster within the next 24 hours.
Refunds will be processed automatically to the original payment method, with SX Global saying customers should receive their money within 14 to 21 days.
The cancellation comes with the 10 October race less than three weeks away, and is a significant setback for World Supercross in the UK. The championship says it has built a “passionate and important following” in Britain and acknowledged that the decision will be disappointing for fans, teams, riders and partners.
SX Global insists that its focus is now on completing the investment process and putting the championship in a position for longer-term growth.
“We remain confident in the future of the Championship,” the company said.
The World Supercross teams have also issued a joint statement backing the championship and saying they remain committed to competing when it returns.
There is currently no indication in the announcement of whether the British GP will be rescheduled, or when World Supercross will next race in the UK.
