Why traffic laws exist, even on group rides

WHILST on a group ride in America, one member, who was clearly not paying attention, went straight into the guardrail. In turn, the following motorcyclists behind piled up, accumulating a hefty repairs bill. Luckily, all the riders appear to have got off lightly despite their rogue road positioning and lack of protective gear - Maybe a lesson learnt!
