Yamaha amps up the sporting edge in latest Yamaha R7 trailer

The keenly anticipated Yamaha R7 reveals a tiny slither of itself ahead of its upcoming world premiere on Monday (18 May)

Yamaha R7 second teaser

The launch of a new “R’-prefixed is always a cause for celebration but the upcoming unveiling of the all-new Yamaha R7 is just that bit more exciting than the norm.

Replacing the now discontinued-for-road-sale Yamaha R6, the middleweight model will evolve into the R7, most likely using a tuned version of the CP2 engine found in the MT-07, even if we are still holding out for a trimmed take on the R1’s unit.

The R7 comes as a time when the ‘supersport’ class in its traditional 600cc bracket is now all but over with manufacturers either exiting the segment or focusing on more real-world performance.

However, Yamaha’s shift in philosophy with the R7 looks set to inject fresh life into the category, as well as give the R7 a greater shot at maintaining his lofty results on track in light of forthcoming regulation changes that would allow the bigger engined Triumph Daytona/Street Triple hybrid and Ducati V2 compete.

It’s fitting then that the R7’s spiritual habitat - the race track - sets the stage for the latest teaser even if we are still none the wiser about how it will ultimately look when it is revealed. Still, we DO get a brief first glimpse at the front-end profile that has us putting our necks on the line and suggesting a mix off R1 and (controversially) MT-09.

Fortunately we don’t have long to wait now until we find out with 18 May (Monday) the date for your diary for what will surely be one of the year's biggest unveilings.
