Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez is up for the prestigious Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, which is his sixth nomination in total at the Laureus Awards.

As part of the 2025 line-up, Marquez joins Tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Mondo Duplantis (Athletics), Ousmane Dembele (Football), and Tadej Pogacar (Cycling) in being nominated for the award.

Marquez previously won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award in 2013, which was his debut season in MotoGP. Despite competing against the likes of Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, and teammate Dani Pedrosa, Marquez became MotoGP champion as a rookie before winning the championship again in 2014.

Now a MotoGP champion with Ducati (2025) as well as Honda, Marquez’ brilliant achievement last season came just one year after being nominated for the Laureus World Comeback of the Year award.

Speaking about his sixth nomination, Marquez said:

“This is my sixth nomination for the Laureus World Sports Awards - but I still get that same buzz that I felt receiving my first one, 12 years ago!”

The quality of the Nominees goes to show how special the Awards are, and I’m delighted to be shortlisted amongst such prestigious company."

The 2026 Laureus World Sport Awards will take place in Madrid, Spain, on 20 April.

If Marquez repeats last year’s success in 2026, we could see the Spaniard shortlisted again next year. By winning the 2026 MotoGP title, Marquez would become a ten-time world champion. Doing so would also give Marquez his eighth MotoGP championship, which would be one more than his great rival Rossi.

A lot of racing will take place before that happens or not, and it seems as though Marquez and Ducati will need to overcome the combination of Marco Bezzecchi and Aprilia, after the Italian dominated last weekend’s season-opener in Thailand.
