Honda signs Moto2 star David Alonso to multi-year MotoGP contract

Honda’s MotoGP plans for 2027 are beginning to take shape, after the Japanese company revealed its first signing of the 850cc era. 

Colombian star David Alonso will move up to MotoGP with Honda, however, a major detail about his signing has been left unconfirmed. Honda says Alonso has been signed to a multi-year contract without actually specifying whether he will ride for the factory HRC team, or Lucio Cecchinello’s LCR squad. 

What we do know is that one of the factory HRC seats will be occupied by Fabio Quartararo, after Honda confirmed his arrival shortly after breaking the news of Alonso joining the company. 

Honda could be holding off on revealing where Alonso will ride due to the fact it might not have made that decision yet. 

Quartararo’s compatriot Johann Zarco will stay with Honda next season as his current deal does not run out until the end of 2027. Zarco’s LCR team-mate Diogo Moreira will also be aboard a Honda again next season, after the Brazilian signed a multi-year deal that started this year. 

However, it’s unclear whether Honda will keep things unchanged at LCR and therefore promote Alonso straight to the factory team, or whether Alonso will be placed at LCR with Moreira instead moving to the official HRC outfit.

Regardless of who lands in what team for 2027, Honda’s 2027 line-up has taken a major step towards being finalised with the addition of Alonso, who became Moto3 world champion in 2024.

Alonso, who is taking part in his second season in Moto2 this year, currently sits fourth in the title race. Alonso is one place, and one point ahead of CFMoto team-mate Dani Holgado, who himself is moving up to MotoGP in 2027 with Gresini Racing.
