TT organisers refuse to share findings of Mercer’s wrong-way crash
The findings of the report into the crash, which left Steve Mercer in hospital for five months, are to remain confidential
FIRST REPORTED by the BBC, the TT organisers are refusing to share the findings of a report into how TT racer Steve Mercer was apparently instructed to ride the wrong way around the TT course, to then collide with an official course car coming the other way.
The BBC report that the Manx government has also refused to divulge the contents of the paper, with a Department for Enterprise spokesman stating that the report was written “on a confidential basis” and that it “belongs to the ACU”.
The 100mph accident happened during a practice session days before the opening Superbike race when fellow rider, Dan Kneen was tragically killed. In the aftermath of the crash, the course was closed and Mercer began riding back to the paddock area, the wrong way around the course. It’s not known who it was that instructed the Kent-based racer to do this.
Mercer spent five months in hospital after the incident suffering a broken back, fractured larynx and numerous other injuries.
